Every songwriter has those songs that you write while trying to get the creative juices flowing—the little junkheaps that, while having a genuine good idea or two, are mostly composed of drivel and are usually not worth saving. This song is one of mine; I wrote it as my first song for February Album Writing Month this year, and promptly discarded it. A sketch—nothing more. Or so I thought. Luke and Josh decided to cover it for some godforsaken reason and they recorded it and expanded the arrangement. It's much better than the original. I had nothing to do with it.

I suck the sand into my mouth again
I wait until you've left to stand up and walk away
I spit the granules out from my throat onto the grass
I turn and look back at your toes, perfect and smooth
I choke down glasses of Sharpie scents, singing in tune
I fake all through the night and then burn fabric
I swim, shimmery sweetening beneath grotesque skies
